Catherine S.
Private tutor in Stanford, CA
Education
Graduated from Yale with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. Currently finishing my first year as a PhD student in Biochemistry at Stanford. Broadly, I am studying how enzymes have adapted to work at different temperatures - a problem that has implications for our understanding of mechanisms of catalytic rate enhancements. I won the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to pursue this work.
Experience
I am excited to motivate high school students to master classroom subjects/test prep as quickly and thoroughly as possible because there is so much out there to explore! I have a strong background in biology, chemistry, math, and physics. I have a unique perspective on college preparation for students interested in pursuing interdisciplinary fields of study around the biology, chemistry, and engineering interface. Additionally, I am skilled at writing and communication. I will work with students to develop an intuition about how to communicate clearly and concisely with regard to their own written work, including college application essays. My previous teaching experience includes music lessons, chemistry tutoring, as well as teaching high school students through the Splash program for three years at both Yale and Stanford. I teach by using by communicating fundamental principles that can be used to generate problem solving strategies rather than rote memorization and microscopic focus on particular problems. I take my commitments very seriously. I am looking to develop relationships with students over the course of many years. As I have just begun my PhD, I will be in the area for 5+ years. However, I am also willing to help out for shorter-term commitments as well. Send me a message and we can meet up and make sure I'm a good fit for your child :) Awards & Honors: 2015 National Institutes of Health Biomedical Engineering Summer Student Fellow Yale Science Scholar 2015 (awarded, declined) Yale Science Scholar 2014 (awarded, accepted) Publications: Duffy, E. Hobbies
I run, bike, and climb regularly when I'm not in lab. I also love cooking and baking. I also spend a lot of time reading. Currently working through the epic tome "The Gene" by Siddhartha Mukherjee. I worked with the Student Technology Collaborative at Yale to fix students computers. In addition to understanding the importance of studying and working hard, I am very aware of the importance of wellness and self care and take a holistic view to student development.
