Education

Princeton University, BA in Philosophy Graduated magna cum laude I am a alumnus of the BridgeTEFL ESL Program and have a certification for ESL teaching through them.

Experience

For ESL students: Welcome ESL students! I’m happy to offer classes for students who are looking to improve their English skills. I am an accredited ESL teacher (through BridgeTEFL) and have taught English to ESL students at leading ESL companies. I can offer a great deal of material, and will teach reading, writing, speaking and listening. You can start at any level of English and we will work together based on what you already know. This is the perfect opportunity to work with a native English speaker 1-on-1 who is trained to teach the subject. For English, Literature, Philosophy Students (and more): Welcome to my profile! I recently graduated magna cum laude (top 10-15% of the class) from Princeton University with an A.B. in Philosophy. For the past four years I have been tutoring students in a wide range of subjects. Through the years, I have developed my own approach that enables students to excel. In working with me, you will practice recognizing and applying patterns rather than doing stressful repetition and memorization. You will be taught to approach material in the way that elite universities expect from high achieving students. Many tutors you encounter know the material, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they know how to teach it. I have chosen to limit the subjects that I teach so that I can offer not just my knowledge but a clear vision of how to share this knowledge with students. The subjects that I teach focus on language, grammar, how to communicate an argument, how to detect an argument, how to contextualize an argument, how to vocalize or interpret an idea, and how to apply these things to a wide array of situations to broaden their critical capacities. These skills are not simply acquired and they require specialized attention. My approach has two major elements. The first is sustained and careful close reading of texts to develop a student’s reading skills. The second involves a socratic method of question and answering that forces the student to think critically about the texts. The tasks that I will ask of the students will be similar to the sorts of challenges that a student will face in a college classroom, but they will be targeted individually for the student and designed around the student’s abilities. For Everyone: I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I’m willing to offer make up classes most days of the week, including the weekend. I will tutor in any public space in Stanford or Palo Alto. I am also available for tutoring online via Skype. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! Thank you for taking a look at my profile. I look forward to helping you with your work!

I am a filmmaker, writer and violinist. I am half-Japanese and have spent a good deal of time travelling through Europe, Japan and China. I also love teaching and care about spreading my passion for learning in general to my students, be it in mathematics, music or reading. Every student I have worked with has been an adventure, helping me hone my teaching techniques and showing me the genuine potential of every single person when placed in the right context. I hope to work with you!
